Dear delegates,

With so many of us focusing on our assigned country and its role in the UN, we would like to share several facts about the bond between Macedonia and The United Nations. Here they are!

1. Macedonina Accepted in 1993

“On April 8, 1993, the UN formally accepted The Security Council approved United Nations membership for another former Yugoslav republic after a clumsy-looking compromise ended a controversy with Greece over its admission and injected a little more stability into the Balkan region.“ (New York Times)

2. Macedoina or FYROM?

Although many countries recognize it as Macedonia, the United Nations still appoints the name Former Yougoslav Republic Of Macedonia.

3. The flag problem

Did you know Macedonia has had two flags? It’s true. The first flag, contained a symbol found on ancient tombstones in Vergina, a town in Greek Macedonia. Greece claimed its owned the copyright to this symbol, and, to keep trade routes open, The Republic of Macedonia agreed to change the flag in 1995.

5. Treaties alert! Did you know Macedonia ratified the Refugee Convention on July 28, 1951 and December 15, 1959.

The country has agreed upon providing basic existential help for the current refugee seekers, but still remains sharp on the asylum procedures for refugees.
