MMUN Attire

Dear delegates of MMUN 2016,

Your preparations for this year`s conference are at the very end, but there is one more challenge standing on your way- choosing an outfit for the conference! Although it might seem something you could do the last minute, it is very difficult to choose an outfit and at the same time respect the concept of western business attire. The concept can be very intimidating for students and confusing, since not all of you have been part of Model UN before. On the other hand, consensus over what should be appropriate for the conference has not been made, but there are some common rules. I have decided to write this article, with high hopes It will serve you as a guide.

The ladies usually have bigger struggles regarding the proper outfit for the conference of MMUN, so I will start with you ladies.

Here are some examples of outfits that are appropriate:

The female suit is often considered the quintessential business attire. Pioneered by the world renowned fashion designer Coco Chanel, the female suit is worn by women all around the world in all sorts of formal environments, such as Model UN conferences. Navy, black, camel, and gray are good colors for suits. These colors are neutral and becoming, and they are easy to pair with different shades. Underneath the suit, you may wear a blouse or a button up. You may definitely consider matching them with patterns or solid colors. Make sure that the pants are neither too long nor too short. They should not drag on the floor, but your ankles should not show either.

Blazers

If you do not own a business suit, a blazer would be a good option for you. A blazer paired with a pair of straight black pants makes a delegate look serious and chic.

Blouses and Button Ups

Blouses and Button Ups can be either paired with straight pants or a knee-length skirt. The easiest way to wear colors and patterns is through blouses and button-ups. If you decide to go with this, make sure you take into consideration not to wear see-through blouses, the blouse is not too low cut, make sure it is not too tight, If the blouse or shirt is too sheer, wear a tank top or a spaghetti strap shirt underneath the shirt. Committee rooms tend to be really cold so wearing something underneath would be an added bonus.If you are wearing a sleeveless shirt, wear a cardigan or blazer on top.

Skirts

The appropriate skirt for a Model UN conference should be knee-length. When you sit down, the skirt should only ride up about four fingers up your legs. Pencil skirts and A-line skirts are great pieces to combine with your blouses and blazer. When you don’t want to wear pants, simply wear a skirt! The top part of your outfit can still remain unchanged. Just remember that when you wear a skirt, you should wear tights underneath. Wearing different colors of skirts is encouraged, but just makes sure that the colors are not too vibrant and are neutral and slightly muted.

Dresses

Wearing a dress is by far the easiest solution to the question of what to wear. You do not have to worry about matching a top with a bottom. The length guideline for skirts also applies for dresses. If your dress is sleeveless, you should wear a cardigan or blazer to cover up and you should also wear tights under your dress.

Shoes

It can be difficult to choose which ones to wear, but have one thing in mind- spending all day at the conference in really high-heels and other uncomfortable shoes is very risky. Also, it is not proper to wear platforms or sandals, since they astride from formality. I would suggest wearing shoes with lower heels or flats. Flats are always fashionable.

Jewelry

Beautiful necklace and pair of earrings can always brighten up your looks. However make sure they are not flashy or over-sized. Regarding the hair, the best way is to put it in a bun. With all the debating, it could get warm, so your hair should not bother you during the conference and you should avoid playing with it. Make-up should be very descent, face powder, mascara and lipstick which does not be stand out from your skin color.

When it comes to male outfits for the conference, it is not very complicated because it includes black suit, white ties and formal shoes. Jeans, t-shirts and trainers are strictly forbidden and contradictory to the dress code for the Model United Nations Conference. Your hair should be well brushed, and do not experiment with different hairstyles, keep it formal!

Clothes say very much for a person`s character, so be careful what you wear. If you follow this simple guide, you will not make mistakes.
